Evolution News Group Signup

The Evolution Newsgroup is a campus-wide forum for announcing seminars, positions, courses, meetings, soliciting feedback, or anything that is broadly of interest to the community of evolutionary biologists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Due to a formatting change, traffic will now include regular announcements for the Evolution Seminar Series (ESS) and the Evolution Reading Group (ERG) that reads classic and recent theoretical and synthetic works on evolutionary biology, along with announcements that members of the email list find relevant.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ADDRESSES FOR SENDING AND SUBSCRIBING HAVE CHANGED BECAUSE OF AN UPDATE IN THE SYSTEM BY DOIT.

How to Post
  1. Send your message to evolution-newsgroup@lists.wisc.edu. This should work. If not, continue to step 2.
  2. Make sure you are sending from the same email address under which you are registered. Otherwise, it will not go through. This is to prevent non-members (mostly commercial spammers) from sending.
  3. However, the listserv does not know that yourname@wisc.edu is the same as yourname@facstaff.wisc.edu or yourname@wiscmail.wisc.edu or any other variant you might have signed up for at one time or another.
  4. If your email bounces, you can either send it again from the email address under which you originally registered or ask me to change the email address under which you are registered by emailing me at mawhite1@wisc.edu.

Guidelines
  1. Since any Newsgroup email will go to 209 email addresses, make sure all emails you are sending are of broad interest. If you think something might be of interest to a handful of evolutionary biologists and you know who they are, you should send it to them personally. Or, if you are insure, send the announcement to Mara McDonald (mamcdona@wisc.edu).
  2. NO ATTACHMENTS without prior approval from mawhite1@wisc.edu. Approval will generally be granted for seminar and course announcements, but probably not for much else.
  3. Postings must be in accordance with UW listserv policy. This includes a ban on commercial, political, and non-university (non-evolutionary in our case) related material.
  4. Hopefully, these policies will be followed on the honor system. However, the moderator (mawhite1@wisc.edu) has the responsibility to enforce existing policy or add new policies to better fit the community’s needs.
  5. Generally, we want to encourage that this list be as widely used and read as possible. That means that people should feel free to send anything that is may be interesting to the broad spectrum of evolutionary biologists. However, people should keep in mind that we do not want people to unsubscribe from the list because irrelevant posting volume is too high.
  6. In case of technical problems, Mike White (mawhite1@wisc.edu) can post announcements, but in general we prefer that you send items to the list yourself.
