Evolution and Extinction

An introduction to evolution. The first half of the course focuses on the process of evolution, including its molecular basis, adaptation, natural and sexual selection, and speciation. The second half surveys the history of life on earth over the past 3.5 billion years, with a focus on vertebrate evolution. We also discuss the major extinctions and their causes, and today's environmental situation in the light of the geologic past. Taught with Byers. 3 cr/fall, spr.
