Darwin Day 2011 - Know Thyself: Humans and Evolution

Thursday, February 10

  • 8am-4:30pm: Teacher Workshop, led by Kristin Jenkins and faculty from the UW Anthropology Department. Hands-on session in the morning, followed by lunch and the Scientific Symposium. The Human Evolution Teaching Resources from the workshop are available for all.
  • 12pm: Evolution Seminar Series: Darwin's Functional Reasoning, Homology, and the Structure(s) of Evolutionary Theory, by Alan Love, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
  • 1:30-4:30pm: Scientific Symposium, with talks by Ryan Haasl (UW-Genetics), Eve Emshwiller (UW-Botany), Elliott Sober (UW-Philosophy), and Karen Steudel (UW-Zoology). 
  • 7pm: Film showing of Creation (2009), to be followed by a discussion of the film with UW History of Science professors Ron Numbers and Lynn Nyhart, and U-Minnesota's Alan Love.

Friday, February 11

  • 6:30pm: Reception and keynote lecture by Jill Pruetz, Iowa State University: Ecology and behavior of savannah chimpanzees at Fongoli, Senegal.

Saturday, February 12

  • 9am-2pm: Tree of Life exploration stations and scavenger hunt (kid friendly! Win a prize!)
  • 10:30am: Talk by John Hawks, UW-Madison: Neanderthal genomes: Meet your inner caveman.
  • 12:30pm: Talk by Karen Rosenberg, University of Delaware: The evolution of the human birth process.
  • 1:30pm: Wrap up panel with all three speakers.
