Darwin Day Symposium: Evolution Matters

Additional Information: This is the third annual Darwin Day Symposium hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Evolution Community as part of the worldwide celebration of the birth of Charles Darwin. The morning session (9 am-noon) will feature three talks by eminent evolutionists: Don Waller (UW-Madison Botany Dept); John Yin (UW-Madison Chemical and Biological Engineering Dept.); and Neil Shubin (University of Chicago Organismal and Evolutionary Biology). The afternoon session (1-4 pm) will move to the Geology Museum for multiple interactive displays on evolution and a book signing by Neil Shubin for his new book, "Your Inner Fish."

Additional Information: Special presentation by Martha Heil from the American Institute of Physics The Good News and the Bad News on How Science is Perceived in the US Martha Heil works in both media relations and government relations at the American Institute of Physics. She tracks occurrences of the introduction of "intelligent design" and challenges to science. She coordinates actions by the physics community and contributes to actions by the broader science community on this issue. Heil also works on Inside Science News Service, AIP's news product about the science behind current affairs for non-science-journalists.

Additional Information: Sean Carroll's presention was part of the Academy Evening Series at the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters. From icefish to pocket mice to European Kestrels, from the Antarctic to desert lava flows to meadows, from anti-freeze proteins to cryptic coloration to color vision, Carroll discussed how the forensics of evolution reveals the evolutionary record found in DNA.
